There was a trumpetful of best bitter for Kenny Ball when he and his Jazzmen appeared at Tamworth and District Round Table’s charity dance at Drayton Manor on Saturday. The proceeds from the dance which was attended by 450 people, will go to local charities.

Tamworth may soon have its own folk club if some kindly landlord is willing to provide premises.
One of the organisers, Mr. Michael Gillan of Lichfield, told the “Herald” that they felt there was hardly anything going on in Tamworth for young people to do.
“We are opening a folk club in Lichfield in two weeks time and at the moment we are looking around for premises in the Tamworth area in order to open a second club in about six weeks”, he said.
“All we need is just a room in a pub, and I think that with the turnover in drink, it will pay the landlord to let us have it for nothing”.
Mr. Gillan does not know if people in Tamworth are interested in folk music but he considers that the only way to find out is by trying to hold a folk club.
“There are so many different sorts of folk music which can appeal to everyone”, he said.
Eventually he would like to see a club which would have not only folk artistes but also blues and jazz.
“We are out to entertain people and we will get what they want”.
It is planned to hold the club every weekend featuring folk singers and groups well know on the club circuit.

A 17-year-old labourer, one of more than 100 lined up on a dance floor and searched for offensive weapons after a teenager had been stabbed in the stomach during a Sunday night discotheque, appeared before Tamworth magistrates on Tuesday for sentence.
Peter Leonard Morgan of 75, Dimbles Lane, Lichfield, convicted at a previous court for carrying offensive weapons and remanded in custody for reports, was fined £30, with £10 costs.
The Chairman, Mr. Arthur Heathcote, told Morgan; “You came along with the others to cause trouble in Tamworth. That is something we are not prepared to tolerate.”
Mr. John Grey, prosecuting, said Morgan was one of a number of youths who went to the Mercian Community Centre on the Leyfields Estate but the stabbing of an 18-year-old youth was nothing to do with him.
Mr. Grey said that during the search of the youths at the discotheque “a vast amount of stuff” like motor cycle and lavatory chains and a number of knives were found.
Morgan had a studded leather belt with a metal Maltese cross and he also had a pocket knife, Mr. Grey said. He had been convicted but sentence had been postponed for reports on his suitability for a return to borstal training.
Mr. Robin Heslop, defending, said Morgan had not been involved in any violence and it was his bad luck to be at the discotheque that night. To send him back to borstal would server no useful purpose.

Tamworth’s first ever “Contemporary Music” club opens on Wednesday at the Jolly Sailor public house.
The club is designed to cater for the fans of the blues, folk and progressive types of music.
In the words of founder Mike Hubbard, who recently produced a folk concert at the Jolly Sailor “The club will help to fill a large gap in Tamworth as there is no entertainment in the town at present which specifically caters for the younger generation.”
The opening group will be one of the Big Bear Promotions groups “Tea and Symphony” a well-know Birmingham progressive band, whose members play over 35 different instruments and include light shows and comic spots in their act.
Future bookings include groups: Kite, Gasoline, New Modern Idiot Grunt Band, Pig Sty Hill Light Orchestra, Magna Carta, Gerry Lochran and Medicine Head.”
The resident club M.C. will be Pete Clement who has featured in several recent Little Theatre productions of folk music and poetry readings.
“One of the main features of the club is that amplification will only be used when necessary and dancing will not be allowed as the club is for musical appreciation only.” Mr. Clement commented.
The club’s other founder, Mr. Roy Everett, a greengrocer from Deer Park and a Big Bear Artiste with several records to his credit said of the club’s future:
“If the club proves successful it is hoped to expand to other areas and I certainly feel the scope in this “field” is tremendous as so much can fall into the “contemporary music” category.

Cannabis resin bought by a 17-year-old college student at £9 an ounce was peddled among fellow students.
Lichfield magistrates were told this last Thursday when six youths – one of them from Tamworth, appeared before them and pleaded guilty to drug offences.
Paul Rex Williams (17) of Wigginton Road, Tamworth was fined £15 with £5 costs.
Alderman Taylor told them: “It is the first time that this kind of thing has come up at Lichfield and I think you realise that these are most dangerous and serious offences.”

Over 450 people attended the annual chicken barbecue held by Tamworth Young Farmers’ Social Club at Thorpe Hall on Friday. They were able to dance into the small hours to the music of “Cartridge” and records by a disc jockey.
