A fashion show featuring “way-out” clothes and a five-group concert are two of the new events planned for Tamworth College’s rag week between March 7 and 14.
“We are approaching disk jockey Jimmy Savile to see if he will take part in the (sponsored) walk”, said 17-year-old student Betty Jackson of Lichfield.
The rag programme will end on Saturday night with a ball for which a popular group is being booked.

An imaginative plan for major improvements at Tamworth’s Corporation-owned Assembly Rooms is being put forward by the borough Arts Club.
Phase one of the scheme would involve building a new annexe on the left-hand side of the hall housing new stage doors leading to dressing rooms, toilets, make-up room and cast waiting area at the same level as the existing stage, and with scenery workshops and a store in the basement below.

A LOCAL GROUP may soon be making a bid for the record charts as a well known progressive recording company wishes them to make tapes of their compositions at the company’s studios.
A song writing contract with a music publishing company is also a future possibility. The group is retaining a semi-professional status for the time being with Archer continuing work as a joiner and Snip and Harrison as tele-communications engineers.
However they hope to turn professional as soon as Camelot has established its name and reputation and the future looks promising. Bookings include a local concert and a two week tour of Ireland definitely fixed for early March.
Recently formed “Camelot” describe the music they play as “heavy acid rock” and comprise of Aden Archer (19), drummer from Polesworth, John Snip (21) bass player from Tamworth and Rod Harrison (21) also of Tamworth, who plays lead guitar. All have formerly belonged to other local groups.
Rod Harrison, believes their key to success in the future will be the originality of their composition and playing. The group is to make tapes of their self-penned compositions for a recording company which is interested in recording Camelot at a future date.

A surprise telegram sent a 16-year-old Tamworth youth on a jet flight to London – and possibly stardom.
Charlie Harrison of George Street, Tamworth, is the bass player in a new group “Judas Jump” who will be making a bid for the record charts with “Run for your life” their first record to be released next week.
The new group is a combination of two chart-topping groups the “Herd” and the “Amen Corner”
The group were having difficulty in finding a good bass guitarist until Carl Wayne, a former member of Birmingham group the “Move”, recommended Charlie Harrison.
An urgent telegram was sent to Tamworth and one day later Charlie found himself on the Isle of Wight where he spent six weeks practising with the other members of the group.
Next month the group will be off to America, followed by a European tour. No live performances are planned in Britain for another year, but the group will be appearing on “Top of the Pops” and other television and radio shows.
Prior to joining “Judas Jump” Charlie played with several other groups.
He left the Mercian Boys School in 1968 and while working as an apprentice at Messrs. Percy Lane’s factory in Tamworth, he played with “Chapter 24”, a local group.
He became a fully professional musician with the Birmingham group “Paradox”, who released an unsuccessful record. Until recently he was a member of the “Mindbenders” another well-known group, who have now disbanded.

Three Polesworth teenagers who have formed up into a versatile pop and folk group played to their first public audience on Saturday – and added to the success of a village Methodist Church coffee evening.
The group which has not yet been given a name, is made up of 16-year-old David Wood and his cousin Tricia Wood, also 16 and Sarah Collins a year older. Tricia’s mother is the trust treasurer of the church, Mrs Jean Wood. The coffee evening held in the church raised £12 fir trust funds.

Wood End Youth Centre’s new lighting system was christened on Monday night when Radio One disk jockey Malcolm Jay made an appearance.
The new lighting was installed at a cost of £78 by the youth club leader Raymond Howell and chairman Alan Wright after being quoted a fee of £350 by a professional lighting firm.
The lights include spotlights, various coloured effects and other attractions.

PRESSURE of work drove a 46-year-old Polesworth man to writing poetry.
Now only 18 months after he first started writing, Mr. D. T. Baker of “The Uplands”, 49 Fairfields Hill, Polesworth, has had one book of 38 poems published, and two of his poems featured in an anthology.
“I started to write poetry as a form of mental therapy” says Mr. Baker, who is are a manager for a television rental firm.
“There is a lot of pressure in the selling business and, because I don’t drink and don’t take tablets, I needed a hobby to off-set the strain. I had always wanted to write a book but it would involve too much concentration”.

There was a trumpetful of best bitter for Kenny Ball when he and his Jazzmen appeared at Tamworth and District Round Table’s charity dance at Drayton Manor on Saturday. Mrs Pat Holmes (left) wife of the Table chairman and Mrs Barbara Barnes (right) are seen here topping up the trumpet. The proceeds from the dance which was attended by 450 people, will go to local charities. |
