Tamworth Herald – 19/02/71
Tamworth mid-week is not the most exciting place to be by any stretch of the imagination; but the two hundred or so that gathered last Wednesday seemed content enough; perhaps it was because one of the most respected people in the music business was playing in this “music starved town”.
On the bill for Wednesday’s concert was a well-known D.J. billed as Ron Peel, who in fact was Erskine, former resident disc jockey at ‘Mothers Club’. The support group were so unmemorable that I can’t even remember their name, which in fact might be a good thing. [Spinning Wheel - Ed.] Finally, top of the bill was “the only white bluesman”, Duster Bennett.
The Duster wanders into the stage, picking up his very beautiful ‘Les Paul’ guitar, the guitar itself is incredible, once owned by Eric Clapton, who gave it to Peter Green, who in turn gave it to Duster.
With a wink and a smile he began with an instrumental which can best be described as ‘Rockin’ pneumonia and the boogie-woogie flu.
The audience stomped and shouted, the time was right; he knew, they know the tune, sounded familiar, loud cheers ascended, “Bright Lights, Big City”. People’s bodies were beginning to move, feet were thumping, hands slapping, bodies swaying; chorus after chorus he played; to see a crowd working as hard as the artist was beautiful.
His stage time was officially over, but no one was going home; “More, more”, they chanted, wow, was it getting hot. He came back for an encore and played an instrumental called “Country Jam”.

Girls at Tamworth College of Further Education are up-to-the-minute with the latest fashions as our picture of these young ladies with their “hot pants” shows. The girls were just a few of the 250 people who attended the college’s Valentine dance on Friday – the last dance before Rag Week in March. Music for the occasion was supplied by “Soul Machine” and “Probe”. |

For 19-year-old David Keith Willis of Church Lane, Tamworth, the rot had set in after he visited a pop festival at the Isle of Wight last year his father told Birmingham Sessions on Monday.
The youth pleaded guilty to charges of taking cars without permission and of obtaining goods by means of stolen cheques.
Tamworth Herald – 12/03/71
The first fund-raising dance staged by the committee of Tamworth’s 1st Coton Green Scout Group was voted an “outstanding success.” Nearly 90 people attended the event at the Chequers Inn at Hopwas on Friday night. Proceeds from this and other attractions being planned will be used to buy essential equipment for the new group.

Tamworth Herald – 26/03/71
Four hours of virtually non-stop blues and contemporary music filled Tamworth College of Further Education on Tuesday night.
Over 250 people came along to the college for what was billed as a “Ffolly” featuring four bands from the Birmingham area. Star attraction was “Tea and Symphony”, who brought along their own light show, but their brand of music did not quite please everyone present.
The Rag Week blues night which looks like becoming an annual event seems to be regarded as a place to try out new groups who might yet become very well known. One of the groups who appeared last year, “Black Sabbath”, have since climbed high into the charts and earn £1,500 for an appearance.
Our picture shows “Indian Summer” in action. Also on the bill were “Hannibal” and “The Dog That Bit People”.
Tamworth Herald – 26/03/71
Following the recent visit of George Chisolm to the Castle Hotel Jazz Club, next Tuesday the spotlight will fall on George Melly the famous Jazz Blues Singer.
Based in London, George Melly is the music critic of the Sunday Observer and has toured with Mick Mulligan’s Jazz Band.
Appearing again will also be Ken Rattenbury his trumpet and band. Ken has appeared many times on T.V. and for three years performed at the BBCs Jazz Festival at the Albert Hall.
Another new venture for the Castle Hotel is a discotheque which is scheduled to open in May.
