The newly-formed Friends of the Arts Centre Tamworth (FACT) held its first annual general Meeting at the week-end.
Members discussed new fund-raising ideas and they hope to organise a FACT float to take part in Tamworth’s summer carnival.
Committee members have also met borough councillors to explain the aims and objectives of the group.
FACT’s main goal is to improve arts centre facilities and promote the building’s use by attracting more of the public.
More discussions are to take place between the group and councillors at a meeting of Tamworth’s Arts Advisory Council.

Tamworth council worker Steve Godsall could soon be making his own album and single.
That is the prize for winning Radio One’s competition to find the most promising new band in the country.
Sixteen groups have been sorted out from over 700 entries in the contest and Steve is a member of one of the successful ones – “Jester.”
Steve, administration assistant in the borough recreation and amenities department, is lead guitarist with the group.
They are a jazz rock band and they have already recorded a sample of their music for the Western Area heats.
The contest is being run as part of Alan “fluff” Freeman’s “Quiz Kid” programme and Steve of Glascote and his band will go on the air on Sunday, April 17.
The other members of the band include his brother Rick, who lives at Leicester and two friends from Solihull.
The group have only been together three months and are using material written by Steve and his brother – Andy Gough.

United Artists launch new group “Trickster” today with their first single available in the shops. “Trickster” feature local born musician Phil Bates on vocals and lead guitar.
The new single has been penned by Phil Bates in partnership with Colin Hewinson who plays keyboards and the line up has been for the top by many leading critics.
On the “A” side the song is a down tempo number called “To Fly Away”. The opening bars emphasize the Bates vocal ability and the Hewinson keyboard expertise.
It then builds into a rather complicated vocal instrumental piece which demonstrates the full musical capability of “Trickster”.
“Never Too Old to Rock ‘n’ Roll” is the ‘B’ side offering, which switches to the up tempo true rock and roll sound which still finds wide appeal.
“Trickster’s second single is due for release in July with an LP scheduled for the Autumn. Video tape films have also been shot and watch out for these which include one or two surprises.

Steve Adams, last year’s “Melody Maker” folk competition winner, appears at the Unicorn Folk Club tonight.
Steve, who recently moved from the Bristol area to Polesworth, won through this year’s heats in the “Melody Maker” competition on Saturday and is all set for the forthcoming area final to be held in Birmingham.

An exciting rock concert is scheduled at Lichfield’s Civic Hall a week today (May 20th).
The show starts at 8 p.m. and carried on until midnight with non-stop rock music.
Three groups will be playing at the event, which has been organised by the Lichfield Adventure Playground and all proceeds go towards their funds.
As well as three talented bands, there are two DJ’s. One of the main attractions is Tamworth based rock group Lucifer, who are currently gaining tremendous support in the rock circuit.
Lucifer are a high energy band, with lead singer Dave Garner fronting a band with plenty of talent and experience.
Mick Griffiths, lead guitarist with Lucifer, is an imaginative young man, while Kevin “Ozzie” Osbourne provides the unique bass sound.
Another up and coming band, Edge, are also billed to appear at the gig, while Sounds Exclusive complete the bill. DJ’s are Nigg Nolan and Tom Greene.
Tickets are now on sale and cost £1 and can be obtained from the Civic Hall box office or any of the Adventure Playgrounds.

Tamworth Arts Centre is the venue tonight (Friday) for a performance by the distinguished jazz-rock band REDBRASS.
Launched in the Autumn of 1975 by the Belt and Braces Roadshow Company, Redbrass has continued working and touring as an independent musical group.
The distinctive Redbrass sound comes from a jazz-flavoured horn section, a rock-rhythm section and imaginative modern vocal arrangements.
Instrumentally, the band is exceptionally versatile with a repertoire that finds room for Latin percussion, rock instrumentals and unaccompanied harmony singing.
Other off-beat instruments used in their shows include the glockenspiel, tubular bells, timbales and spoons.
Redbrass has played all over Great Britain from Edinburgh to London.
In a critical piece on the band the musical press said of them: “What a pleasure it is to come across a jazz ensemble that is original with ten extremely accomplished members…”

Tamworth’s Art Centre organisers are all set to go ahead with their scheme to erect a theatre bar.
The M&B Brewery have already agreed to grant half the estimated £1,000 cost of the scheme and donations to cover the remainder have been offered by FACT – Friends of Arts Centre, Tamworth – and the town’s Arts Advisory Council.
The bar would be operated on evenings when performances are held and would be run by members of FACT.
Members of the Borough Council’s leisure activities committee were last night being asked to give the final go-ahead to the project.
